Trapped in Darkness: Vivek's Elevator Horror
As a software engineer, Vivek had to take elevators daily. One fine day he started getting a weird dream where he was stuck in an elevator and the power cut brought complete darkness inside the elevator and he couldn't press the buttons. The emergency bell didn't work. The intercom was not working and he was stuck there in that gloaming. It was a very scary dream that kept on coming for the next three to four months. He was ignoring the dream every day. After a few months, all of these abruptly stopped. He was happy and thanked God for relieving him from these creepy nightmares. It seemed like everything was fine.
One day he went to the office. He took the elevator and went up and due to some work had to go down. He faced no problem. During lunch break, he didn't bring his lunch so he had gone outside to eat something. While coming back he boarded the lift. He was alone in that elevator. He pressed the button and the lift started moving up and suddenly there was a zoom sound and it stopped. He was not tensed. He waited for a couple of minutes. His mind was cool till now, but his tension began to build up as the light started flickering. It was kind of reminiscent of the dream which has recurred before him for a few months. He pressed the emergency button sadly there was no sound.
He was alone in the lift. He took the intercom and it was his hard luck that it wasn't working. It was about more than 10 minutes he was stuck in the lift and to top it on the light went off. It was dark. He checked his phone and luckily the network seemed feeble but still showing. He immediately called his manager and tried to explain his situation. It was again his misfortune that the manager couldn't hear his voice. Inside that pitch-dark room, he was feeling claustrophobic and could hear his pacing heartbeats. He thought of sending a SOS and tried contacting security. Due to lunchtime and it being a Saturday, there was a shortage of staff. Nobody noticed that the elevators were not working.
He was shivering, perspiring, and palpitating. He stayed in the darkness for more than 25 minutes. Vivek said this was the time when he recalled those dreams and understood that those dreams were warning. As Vivek stood there in the darkness he couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that had gripped him since the elevator had malfunctioned. The air inside the confined space felt heavy and suffocating. He groped his phone with trembling fingers, desperate for any sign of connection to the outside world. But as he unlocked his phone, cold sweat trickled down his spine. He realized that he was not alone in the elevator.
There was a suffocating silence. Now he felt unseen hands were pressing against his chest, making it harder to breathe. He began to hear whispers echoing in the silence. At first, he dismissed them as the effect of his fear-fueled mind. But soon, the whispers grew louder, more distinct. He discovered that he was not hallucinating.
The eerie murmurs panicked him. He was choked due to the tangible weight of the hands on his chest which is slowly moving toward his throat. In that dead silence, he waited patiently for some help. He was praying and was mentally getting prepared for any calamity. Finally, the elevator jolted back to life. The lights were on and the doors slid open to reveal the familiar sight of the office lobby. In that fleeting moment between life and death, Vivek felt a flood of emotions wash over him. Relief surged through his veins.
With shaking legs, he stepped out of the elevator. The fluorescent lights seemed to burn brighter than ever before. Each step he took felt heavier than the last. He tried to push aside his fears. He knew deep down that the darkness and the presence of an unknown he had encountered in that elevator were not so easily dismissed. He made his way back to his desk.
The mere thought of stepping into an elevator filled him with a sense of fear. Deep down, he knew that what he had encountered that day could not be explained away by logic or reason. From that day forward, Vivek made a decision, he would never set foot in an elevator again and to avoid the confined spaces. No matter the inconvenience or the extra time it added to his daily routine he opted for the stairs.
He made the difficult decision to resign from his current office as it was not possible to navigate the 15th floor of the tall office building daily. His fear of elevators had become too great a burden to bear. Seeking a fresh start, Vivek eventually found a job at another office located on the second floor. To date, elevator Horror Haunts Vivek. So we bid him farewell.
